Gurlu Gurlu Maya Children’s Service

Our service embeds the local culture and language into every day practice.

We are located in the West Pilbara region of Western Australia within the City of Karratha. Specific areas of country are associated with specific languages. The Ngarluma language is the language of the plains and the coast, and the Yindjibarndi language is used on the tableland and along the Fortescue river.

Our approach

We are influenced by the Reggio Emilia approach whereby a child is not someone who needs to be filled with knowledge but someone who can learn through interacting and experiencing the world. We follow the principle that children have the right to be listened to, respected, loved and valued.

We believe that the environment is the third teacher and this is integral in guiding children and families to make sustainable and ethical decisions. We have integrated a worm farm and gardening into the daily practice of our service. We also encourage the children and their families to be involved in our recycling station where we reuse and repurpose items.

Our services

We are a 60-place service.

  • Our Walambari room (nursery ) caters for infants from 6 weeks to 24 months.
  • Our Mangurru room (toddlers) caters for children from 24 months to 3 years.
  • Our Mujira room (kindy) caters for children from 3 years to 5 years.

Entering the service through the security gates leads to an alfresco area with outdoor furniture and the recycling station. The spacious central foyer includes a couch area, sign-in table and office hub. The centralised kitchen overlooks the foyer and includes a self-service breakfast bar.

Each of the rooms have their own indoor and outdoor play space. The Mangurru room has its own edible garden area.
